Nice little place in Coral Gables. My date had the pasta in creamy sauce which she loved, and I had the gnocchi in tomato sauce which we both loved (she kept stealing from my plate :) ). The owner Perry was very nice and their bread is also really good. Would recommend!

Came today for a graduation party with my husband and baby. The restaurant was rented out for a party of about 30-35 . Great food fresh portions are the size they should be . You are able to savor the food instead of pig out. Lovely ambience with cafe del mar music. Gave me a New York cozy vibe . Do not know prices since it was pre paid and pre planned but lovely family owned place.

Small and cozy restaurant with great food, also has a bar. Family owned, husband is the host and wife cooks. Their mushroom and shrimp risotto is delicious as is their veal picatta. Other plates that are great as well is their filet mignon and tuna. They have excellent service, play low lounge type music. Definitely will be going back.

Amazing! Very impressed with this place. I have lived in the neighborhood for almost 15 years and driven by forever and never tried it. I've learned good things come to those who wait, apparently... I tried portobello for the first time tonight and everything was amazing. The owner greeted us and recommended an excellent inexpensive bottle of wine. My son ordered spaghetti and meatballs which he liked. We started with Cesar salad and shrimp which was cooked perfectly! We then moved on to The salmon bowtie pasta which was also incredible... Fe finished off with some amazing tiramisu and I will be back for sure!

We just come back after a long time and it was surprisingly good to see that they completely remodeled the whole restaurant and it came out beautiful and modern, with a nice ambient and they actually changed some of the dishes on the menu. We enjoy a bottle of wine with some appetizers like the Stuffed Piquillos Pepper which were amazingly delicious and for dessert we had the homemade Tiramisu and it was very fresh and tasty! Gracias Vladimir we will definitely come back for more! And our server Jose was very nice to us!

Excellent service. Food is fantastic and at a great price point. Risotto di mare and the porcini risotto are exceptional 10/10

This place is really nice. It has fantastic food (one of the best lasagnas I've ever eaten) and good service. It's a great place to go with a small group. One thing I noticed was the serving size was rather small. I'm not an individual who eats a great deal in one sitting, but I was left a little hungry and wanting more after I finished my meal. The parking is also tight and cramped behind the restaurant (although you can pay meters in the front if that's your thing).

This place is wonderful and has great tapas for really reasonable prices. I went with a couple of friends on a night where they had live music and 25% off all wines. So we got a bottle and split a bunch of small plates. We started off with the Portobello Ecstasy, which is their signature appetizer. It was pretty big and I may not be a great person to weigh in on it because I'm not a huge fan of mushrooms. It was good, but not great. I felt the same way about the fried calamari. It's nothing I haven't had before. The rest of the tapas, however, were amazing. The garbanzos, chistorras, the manchego/proscuitto plate, and OMG the bruschetta. Those were to die for. The risotto ball was a wonderful taste of how amazing their pasta dishes must be. There were a couple of other dishes that I would have tried but did not have even a little bit of room for. Their tapas selection is pretty sizable and judging from my experience, I would say they're probably all reliably wonderful. For dessert, we got the tiramisu. That was okay. I would have expected more after the meal we had just had. As far as the service, it was both good and bad, oddly enough. Our server made sure to keep our wine glasses full but then he took awkwardly long to come by and ask if we wanted dessert or the check. By dessert, we were also done with our wine so I would have expected they follow up on the drink situation and they didn't. Overall, great time, though. I would recommend and would return.

Fantastic food and service. I am a sucker for a family business. The wife is the head of the kitchen making delicious fresh soups on the daily. The husband is the most welcoming and catering host. You will not be disappointed with anything you eat here. I also really like the ever changing daily specials. :) great for a nice romantic dinner, even though I always go for lunch.

Ordered lunch for 5 people. it was delivered very fast , fresh, hot, delicious, the best Italian I had for long time, all of us agreed ! the menu is extensive, inexpensive and you find tapas, great salad selection, but also fish, meat and the Italian deserts you cannot miss! the portions are big, and served very tastefully. Will order surely again!

A favorite! The filet mignon is always cooked to perfection. They are currently renovating so the atmosphere isn't as lovely as usual, but I'm sure it will be better than ever when done. They have live music on the weekends. The owner is almost always there and a wonderful host. This is not a place to go when in a hurry. Meals are never rushed and the restaurant is really designed for you to sit and enjoy.

This was our first time dining at this Portuguese restaurant. Sorry to say we are not coming back again. We asked for the chirizo appetizer and they were really hard. We ordered the broiled cod it was almost burn and let's of bone....

Wow! Completely unexpected! This place is a hidden gem! I was caught by surprise and in a great way! The funniest part of this story is the fact that I was literally dragged out here to eat. I was hanging out with the family on a Saturday afternoon. They have a variety of Tapas and wines that seemed very good. I tried some conch fritters that were excellent, followed by a veal and pasta. The food was great. I can't wait to make my way back to this small venue and try some of their other plates.

First time and must say was pleasantly surprised! The good food & great prices earns this place 4 stars! Let's start with the service: nicely paced however they never brought any bread to the table. Since this was my first time I don't know if they do or don't serve bread regardless I was glad they didn't because I always eat too much bread anyway. They offer a list of tapas ranging from $4-$6 and all the ones I tried we're pretty good. I ordered the meatballs, fried ravioli, fried mozzarella and fried calamari. The calamari were soft, not chewy and lightly breaded and not greasy. It comes with a dipping sauce I didn't particularly care for but they will be happy to give you marinara sauce if you ask. My wife ordered a Cesar salad which was actually really good but they need to chill the lettuce more. I ordered the chicken dijonaisse with whole wheat pasta - the chicken was tender and the sauce was delicious. The pasta was also very good. This is definitely a place you want to try. I been to other Italian restaurants that I've spent 3 times what I spent here and haven't been that impressed. I will come back to try some of there other entrees

Very average food. The host was dismissive of us and brought out someone's food who sat down after us significantly earlier than ours. It was extremely overpriced for the quality of food, very poor service. At the end of the meal they made a mistake on our bill and tried to dispute it. There are many other fantastic Italian restaurants in Miami; this is one that I would not revisit. Conversely, the violinist was excellent and very kind. He should find a better gig. The linguini with clams with fishy, caprese pasta mediocre. The only item on the menu that was good was the stuffed pepper. If not for the host my review would be 3 stars.

Returned this past Saturday and what can I say, nothing short of spectacular. I hadn't been in a while and the place is newly renovated with a bar and seperate seating "VIP" corner to the left. We sat here. I dont know if it was the great veal risotto, the portobello ecstasy, the wine, music, and great company but it was fantastic. Singer/guitarist Machito set the mood with his music. Thanks to the owner for being so attentive and offering us top notch service, always!

Brought my fiance here for a pre-ING Miami Marathon carb fest, and we weren't disappointed. The place is small but incredibly quaint, dimly lit, and pretty romantic. The food was very good... olives & feta tapa, whole wheat pasta, I wasn't completely blown away by it (which is why only 4), but my fiance was which is all that matters right? The authentic and delicious tiramisu was fantastic. There was also live music, a nice older gentleman playing spanish (italian?) love songs on a guitar, which definitely added to the mood... even when he got a little to into a few songs when 3 tipsy older women came in and egged him on, it was quite entertaining. Tips: I'm not a fan of trying to parallel park on Coral Way, so there are a few free parking spots around back (if you can find the back street). Hint: it starts where Backlots is on SW 27th Ave.

Ugh, what a blow. This was one of my favorite Italian place, but the porcini risotto tasted too "wheat-y" and the pasta in the lasagna was mushy. And I don't think there was supposed to be that much tomato sauce. I just hope that the stringy-types of pasta are still good and the desserts too. And that maybe it was an off night.

I went to Portobello two days in a row because it was so delicious! The first outing was with the hunk right below me :) We had a good amount of tapas, which were between $3 and $6. Everything was delicious: the tomato and mozarella was fresh, the breaded shrimp were nice and crispy, and the garbanzo fritos were my favorite! We also shared an entree, but by that point, I was too full to eat anymore. Joel H. liked the pasta, which came with a salad and a glass of wine (for $17.99 on Thursdays). For dessert, he ordered the canolli, which I had a bite of! The next day, I took my Tia to try the restaurant and she loved it! We had more or less the same tapas and again they were all very tasty!

We stopped in here on the recommendation of a friend and we're so glad that we did. The food was delicious. You could just order the tapas and get filled, but we went for more. First we shared the garbanzo frito tapa, the mozzarella caprese, the breaded shrimp, and the arepitas de cielo. They were all very good. We could have easily called it a night there but we decided to take advantage of their Thursday special of a pasta entree, caesar salad, and a glass of wine for $17.99. Thank god we shared LOL But why stop there... we ordered a conolli for dessert. No disappointment here either. And to pull it all together, the service was great and the entire staff was very friendly. We will be back again very soon.

As several other posts have mentioned, the tapas are outstanding and reasonably priced - definitely the highlight of our meal. We went here with two young children and were a somewhat apprehensive at first because it seemed a bit more upscale than we expected, but the owner made us feel very comfortable and within 20 minutes they had live music playing which drowned out any noise that the children made. Very inviting atmosphere with good food and reasonable pricing.

I recently went here with a party of 7. Service really sucked! Food was nothing spectacular and very overpriced! Come on ....plain pasta dish $17! When we first arrived there was a man singing for a very short while and never came back to sing! One of our guest's ordered an appetizer that was never brought to our table. Another guest ordered the lasagna, it was so tiny that it should have been on the appetizer menu is instead of the main course menu. We asked for more bread and the waitress told us it is going to be a while since it is "FROZEN". Really! How can this be a restaurant?? The place was totally empty! How can we have such lousy service when we are the only group in the restaurant! We won't be back!

Portobello is a home restaurant that my wife and I hold dear in my heart. A small venue, with a cook that is hidden behind kitchen doors, but manages to do sneak a look at the patron, romantic setting, great wine, but above all world class Italian meals. The owner is always there- he kind of reminds of the Dos Equis, Stay Thirsty My Friend man. A true romantic hole in the wall.

In Elizabeth T's review ( yelp.com/biz/portobello-… ), she somehow forgot to mention some very important details about our evening at Portobello: 1. Our waiter (Daniel, I asked) was mighty attractive. 2. She did not like Tiramisu before she tried it at Portabello. She DID NOT like it, but NOW she DOES (yes, I know she _is_ a crazy person). 3. The Spaghetti dish we ordered was called "Spaghetti Della Nonna" and it was comfort in a bowl - perfectly cooked spaghetti covered in buttery cream sauce with pancetta mixed in. Oh. My. God. I'm getting hungry thinking about it again. It was perfect. I would take that spaghetti home and tuck it in every night and read it bed time stories (This isn't the kind of spaghetti you spend a night with and never call again. No, sir. It's much too innocent for that). Love this place. Pro Tip: bring cash for the meters outside, they don't play well with credit cards.

What a great little restaurant! The service was fantastic, and the food was amazing. I had one of the specials- fettuccine, scallops, and arugula. It was delicious. The veal was also really good. We will definitely be back.

So good we came back again!!! Hidden gem! The food and atmosphere are fantastic. I definitely recommend this place! While on an assignment in Miami, we tried to find places for lunch within walking distance of the office. Portobello Ristorante was a great find! Everything there seems to be hand crafted with pride. They have a great sandwich list made with artisan bread, and several entree style meals for lunch covering all the bases: veggie, seafood, poultry, pork and beef; there is something there for everyone. The vibe is low key classy with jazzy music playing in the background. Just walking into the restaurant puts a smile on my face, and the owner is friendly and talkative. It's a total experience. If you're in the area, definitely check Portobello Ristorante out!

I went last night for a friend's birthday and let me just say - WOW. The restaurant completely blends in with its surroundings. It's easy to miss if you aren't looking out for it! It's tiny and cozy and totally feels like home. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted by the owner, Vladimir, who not only showed us to our table, but stayed to chat and make some excellent recommendations. The six of us decided to go family style and order an assortment of appetizers and entrees. We got a round of bruschetta, the portobello explosion (a giant mushroom on top of a chunk of mozzarella with some sauce), fried ravioli (cooked PERFECTLY), and another dish with mozzarella, prosciutto, and pesto (I can't remember what it's called). We also ordered two pasta dishes: a penne dish with feta, olives, capers, and spinach, and a spaghetti in creme sauce (I almost wish I hadn't eaten any of the other dishes because I could have just eaten this dish and been totally content!) We finished the night off with three orders of tiramisu, one of which was for the birthday girl. They brought it out during an impromptu round of "happy birthday" sung by the entire restaurant! I absolutely enjoyed this restaurant and cannot wait to go back. It was such a welcoming and charming place, with food that left me comfortably full and happy!!

Very nice hole in the wall, much nicer inside than it appears from the outside, recently updated too. Great service by the owner, good food, a varied lunch menu and reasonable prices... and the fact that it is across from my office make this a winner for me.

This is a tablecloth restaurant...much nicer than I had expected. In fact, it made me realize how long it had been since I had been to a tablecloth restaurant as I battled my 1 year old son trying to pull it off all during dinner. It was Friday, and as Carlos mentioned, there was a guy playing music. There was also a crowd of people at the bar...which someone told us was only one week old and they were christening it. I think it was a bunch of friends/family of the owners. The food was pretty good...the ambiance was nice. Wood floors, kind of a rustic feel too it, pretty dark with candle light, etc. I wouldn't call it Italian, though. I would say it's more a mix of European foods - Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, etc. My husband had pasta with spanish sausage, which he really liked once he added a little more kick to it. I had the cannelloni (spinach/cheese), which was okay. We started off with the mushroom tapa, but we also added some chili flakes to that. Everything needed just a bit more zip. I'd go back, but probably not with my baby. Although another table brought their girls with them... it's the kind of place that I'd like to enjoy my meal and not worry if my son is going to yank the tablecloth along with all of the plates, glasses, and candles off of the table :) Seems like the kind of place that I'd love to try the dessert, but I didn't get a chance.

Hard to find places tlike this anymore. Service is excellent, I believe the owner himself is often a waiter. Risotto is excellent. On Friday's there is a dude playing acoustic guitar, very nice ambiance. If you're a smoker, they have tables outside. thumbs up

OK here goes... First of all, we LOVE this place! The service is friendly and attentive; the atmosphere is great, the music is fun (albeit a tad loud for such a small space); the wine selection is wonderful, the dishes are lovingly prepared; the pastas are unbeatable; the chicken and veal dishes are great... The filet mignon, however, well. It was tough. It was a cheap cut of meat and if I, like many beef lovers I know, would have judged the meal and the restaurant as a whole on this one piece of meat, well, let's say two stars and no return visit... Let Vladimir know you've been cautioned about the filet and definitely order another of the chef''s recommendations. It's going to become a favorite and you will return with family and friends time and again.

Intimate restaurant with personable owners - you come in as customers and leave as friends. Food is very good and several steps above your basic Italian fare. It's pricier, but worth it as a treat for special occasions. Service is a little slow, so don't go if you are in a rush. Parking is definitely a challenge - try parking behind the restaurant if the regulars haven't beaten you to it. Otherwise bring lots of quarters for the parking meters on the street and be prepared to park a few blocks away if you get there during rush. All in all, a great find.

This restaurant is a few blocks from our house and every time we eat there we ask ourselves why we don't go more often. The other day, we walked there for the first time and realized we don't like parking along Coral Way (even though we have never had an issue finding parking). Anyway....this place is consistently good. I can't say everything is great but it is in that "really good" range that will make you tell yourself you're coming back. The prices are decent and the portions reflect that the prices are not too high. I don't think anything is above $20, including the veal dishes that I usually have (with a side of pasta of your choice). The appetizers (try the house special) are excellent....except for my carpaccio that was too cold (but tasty). They do have live music on the weekends inside but you can always sit outside for a quieter table. The wine bottles are very reasonable and they have vinho verde from Portugal which is rare to see at restaurants and very crisp....goes great with the Italian food. The owner is ALWAYS there...lunch or dinner..and always stops at every table to make sure the guests are satisfied. If Yelp had 4.5 stars to give....I would....but they don't....I love supporting neighborhood businesses and this one will continue to get our support!

Food was mediocre at best and not pleasantly or aesthetically plated. Staff was friendly and caring, but that doesn't make up for mediocre food.

We had a delightful meal here Friday night. Surprisingly good, not expensive. The lasagna was special and tilapia delicious. Side of pasta good. Flan was out of this world! Also great live music began at 7 p.m. Really made it nice. Owner and family quite gracious. We'll be back.

I had the lamb chops, my husband had the corvino and our ten year old daughter had the lasagna. Simply delicious! We will be back.

Nice little place in Coral Gables. My date had the pasta in creamy sauce which she loved, and I had the gnocchi in tomato sauce which we both loved (she kept stealing from my plate :) ). The owner Perry was very nice and their bread is also really good. Would recommend!

What a great little restaurant! The service was fantastic, and the food was amazing. I had one of the specials- fettuccine, scallops, and arugula. It was delicious. The veal was also really good. We will definitely be back.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
